Making movies can be a long and costly practice.
Indeed, one only has to look at the list of names rolling up the screen at the end of a film to get an idea of how labour intensive the project was and how long it probably took to put together and edit.
But this didn’t stop a group of fearless freelancers and students from going head-first into a project which would see them shoot seven films in just seven days.
Currently, the UK has more than 1.6 million freelance workers, contributing around £82 billion to the economy but despite the value and wealth of skills they provide, their stories are rarely heard. The purpose of 7 Days in June was to essentially promote and generate awareness of the freelancing profession, and to highlight what committed and skilled freelancers can achieve in a short space of time.
The original idea….
The idea was originally dreamt up by freelance content producer Rob Edwards FRSA while sitting in a London coffee shop last November.
He then set about identifying potential sponsors and partners who could help him to make the concept a reality.
Amongst those that agreed to provide crucial financial support to the project was Brookson and the Professional Contractors Group (PCG). Brookson were excited by the idea right from the start, and saw 7 Days in June as a great way to help support and promote a way of working we feel so passionately about.
Exploring a range of social and economic questions
“7 days in June is an annual collaborative project which explores a broad range of social and economic questions from a number of different perspectives and the topic for 2012 is freelancing,” Mr Edwards explained.
The project looked at freelancing from three different angles; one from the viewpoint of an employer, one from an existing freelancer worker and one from a student who is maybe considering freelancing after their graduation.
Mr Edwards stressed that for the third group in particular freelancing is often an overlooked career choice but since the start of the economic crisis the number of freelance workers has risen by 12 per cent, while the number of graduates out of work has soared to record levels.
Each of the films was shot at Media City and Salford University and also included a number of snippets recorded at the project’s launch event.
The first film was entitled ‘The Flexible Agile Workforce’ and provided an introduction to what freelancers do and why they are so important to the modern world of business.
The second film, called ‘Success for Hire’, looked into the value freelancers offer.
Film three ‘Making it Happen’ explored how freelancers work on a daily basis and the challenges they face.
‘Thinking like a Business’ centered around working effectively and included advice from a number of industry experts.
‘A Freelance Career’ was aimed at students who are considering working as freelancer after they have finished their studies.
And ‘The Making of’ showed how it was all put together.
The seventh and final film will be showed on National Freelancers Day 2012 on November 21st.
