HMRC has launched an online tax guide aimed specifically at dentists.

The Tax for Dentists guide provides basic information on National Insurance, tax and VAT alongside more complex issues such as good record-keeping practices, expenses and completing tax returns.

Paying HMRC and employing staff are also among the topics covered.

It takes between one and two hours to complete if done in a single sitting, but the guide can also be read in sections and returned to at a later date.

Self-employed dentists will find the information particularly helpful, according to Mike Purvis of HMRC, as will those taking on private patients for the first time.

Marian Wilson, head of campaigns, said that the experience of other self-employed practitioners had been taken into account in tailoring the guide to new users, who could then learn from the mistakes of others.

Any further questions raised before the end of Friday March 1st can also be sent directly to HMRC, who are still holding their week-long question and answer session on tax issues via their account @HMRCgovuk and the hashtag #biztaxhelp.
