MP backs competition for the self employed

Friday 29 August 2014

A government competition to showcase some of the UK's best limited companies, sole traders and contractors has been applauded by MP for Solihull and government ambassador for Women and Enterprise Lorely Burt.

She welcomed the 15 for 2015 competition, which aims to seek out the best self employed professionals working in the UK.

It was announced by Mayor of London Boris Johnson, as a means of backing these professionals due to the fact that self employment is rising at a record rate.

According to the most recent figures from the Office for National Statistics, there are now 4.6 million people in the UK who are self employed. This means that 15 per cent of all people in work in the UK are self employed. The number and proportion of people in self employment is the highest that has been seen since records began in 1971.

Speaking about the competition, Ms Burt said: “There are more enterprising individuals out there than ever before and it’s fantastic that the 15 for 2015 competition backs these self-employed professionals. The competition will showcase the amazing talent of independent professionals from across the land and highlight the important contributions they make to the economy and society at large. I wish all of the entrants the best of luck in the competition.”

Spokesperson for the competition Louis Clark explained that the support from Ms Burt was appreciated.

He said: "Record numbers of people across all demographics are choosing to be their own boss and the entrepreneurial spirit and bravery of these individuals must be recognised and celebrated. This is exactly what this competition aims to do and it’s fantastic to have the Government Ambassador for Women and Enterprise celebrate the growing self-employed army with us."

The winning 15 entrants to the competition will get a prize of at least £5,000 in business support, financial advice and technology to spur their firm on that is worth thousands of pounds. They will also be invited to a celebration in London during November.

This competition is opened to all people who are self employed, regardless of what sector they are in. Those who want to enter have until September 1st to do so.

Once entry submissions close, an independent judging panel will then choose the top 15 entrants who will be crowned as the '15 for 15'.

They will then be showcased as some of the most exciting independent professionals in the UK at an event at LSO St Luke's on November 19th.

As well as taking away a number of prizes to help them get their business going, the 15 for 15 will also be required to take part in a number of campaigns to showcase the benefits of setting up a business and how to do so.

ONS statistics show that fewer people in self employment are turning away from this method of working once they get into it, which is why the number of self employed professionals is continuing to increase.
