Are you behind the times on mobile?

Wednesday 11 October 2017

When you're running a small business, you need to keep up with current trends. While you might be active on social media and using the latest technology in your day-to-day life, but you might be missing the obvious: smartphones.

The vast majority of your customers and clients will likely have a smartphone, and responding to this is a key to success. However, new research from PayPal has suggested that many small businesses are not taking advantage of this new technology, which could mean they are missing out on the mobile shopping boom.

PayPal has found that Brits are using their smartphones more and more often when it comes to shopping. This is particularly clear in the younger generation, as almost 60 per cent of 16 to 25-year-olds browse their phones for new things to buy every single day. However, the trend is not limited to the youngsters.

In total, 30 per cent of people in the UK are expecting to use their smartphones to shop more often in the next 12 months, a figure that rises to 44 per cent for 16 to 25-year-olds. So how does this affect small businesses?

PayPal also uncovered that despite this rapid increase in shopping from a smartphone, very few limited companies have websites optimised for mobile devices. In fact, only 18 per cent of small businesses have a website that can adapt to the smaller screen of a phone or tablet.

This makes it harder for potential customers and clients to use the websites, which could be costing you business. There is increasingly big money in mobile shopping, and estimated annual spending in this area almost doubled in just a year's time; it was £13.4 billion in 2016, but has increased to £27 billion in 2017.

This money is partly due to people's willingness to spend more when they're using mobile devices, further highlighting how important it is to make sure your website is optimised for smartphones and tablets. PayPal found that for around a third of businesses, the average sale is between £10 and £30.

On mobile devices, this average spend skyrockets. On a smartphone, the average transaction is worth £84, while on a tablet it is even more lucrative at £103. It's clear, therefore, that mobile optimisation is key to small business success.

Your limited company should make sure your website is easily visible on smaller screens. Customers will give up if they have to constantly be zooming in to press tiny buttons on their smartphone, which could lead to you missing out on sales. Simply changing your site could see your business improve surprisingly quickly.
