Making Tax Digital – What’s Changing in April 2026

From 6 April 2026, sole traders with gross income over £50,000 will be required to comply with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD).

This means you’ll need to:

  • Keep digital records using HMRC-compatible software
  • Submit quarterly updates to HMRC
  • Complete a final year-end declaration as part of your normal tax process

Quarterly updates are not full tax returns — they simply summarise your income and expenses for the period, with final adjustments still made at the end of the tax year.
